OffNet Chat

Privacy Policy

We built OffNet Chat to know as little about you as possible.

Effective date: June 12, 2026

The short version

What OffNet Chat does NOT collect

OffNet Chat has no servers of its own and no way to identify you. We never receive your name, contacts, location, message content, message metadata, IP address, device identifiers, or usage statistics. The app contains no third-party SDKs, no analytics frameworks, and no crash-reporting services.

How your data moves

Identity. When you first open OffNet Chat, your device generates a random cryptographic keypair. That keypair is your identity — there is no registration and nothing is sent anywhere. The private key is stored in your device's Keychain and never leaves it.

Messages nearby. Messages to friends near you travel directly between devices over Bluetooth and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, encrypted end-to-end (Curve25519 key agreement, ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption). Devices that relay a message for others see only random-looking ciphertext with no sender or recipient information.

Messages over the internet (optional). If you turn on the internet bridge, encrypted messages are placed briefly in Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) public database, in mailboxes labeled with random rotating identifiers that cannot be linked to you or your friends. The cloud only ever holds ciphertext, and records are deleted after delivery or expire automatically. Use of iCloud is governed by Apple's privacy policy; Apple does not have keys to decrypt your messages.

Push notifications. Delivered through Apple's push service. The notification payload contains no message content — your device decrypts the message locally before showing a preview, and previews never leave your phone.

What stays on your device

Chats, friend list, profile photo, and settings are stored only on your iPhone. Your friend list and profile are also backed up in your device's Keychain so they survive reinstalls — that backup stays on your device and in your personal device backup, never with us.

Device permissions

OffNet Chat asks for: Bluetooth and Local Network (to reach nearby phones), Camera (only to scan friend QR codes), Microphone (only while you record a voice note), Photo Library Add (only to save photos you choose to save), and Notifications. Each is used solely for its stated purpose; none feeds any data collection.

Abuse reports

OffNet Chat collects nothing automatically. The one exception is when you choose to report a user or message: the content you select to report, plus the identifiers of the people involved, is sent to us so we can review it and act within 24 hours. This information is sent only when you initiate a report, and is used solely to enforce our Terms of Use.

Deleting your data

Settings → Delete Identity & All Data erases your encryption identity, friends, chats, settings, Keychain backups, anything your device placed in iCloud, and your push subscriptions. This is immediate and irreversible. Because there are no accounts, there is nothing to delete on our side — there is no "our side."

Children

OffNet Chat is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone (of any age — see above).

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with an updated effective date. Since the app collects nothing, changes would most likely only describe new features.
